Indonesian authorities announced on Wednesday that the death toll from floods and landslides caused by recent heavy rains on the island of Sumatra has risen to 804, with 650 people still missing.
Channel News Asia, in its English-language broadcast, reported that floods swept through villages at the foot of the mountains, inundating thousands of homes and buildings, and causing disruptions to communication and electricity lines.
For his part, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stressed that the government's priority at the moment is how to send the necessary aid immediately to those affected by the floods, during his inspection of North Sumatra province.
