Three people have died in a wildfire that erupted in a popular tourist destination in Izmir, western Turkey, according to Turkish media reports.

The bodies were discovered in the fire zone approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Izmir city, stated the official Anadolu news agency.

Efforts are ongoing to contain the wildfire, which began for unknown reasons in the Alacati forest region. The authorities have deployed two water bomber aircraft, four helicopters, and 16 tanker trucks to combat the blaze, and evacuations have been carried out in the affected areas.

Turkey has been grappling with a series of wildfires over the past weeks, as temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius and above in many provinces for the past month. Although most of these fires were quickly brought under control, a fire in southeastern Turkey at the end of June claimed 15 lives.

In 2024 alone, wildfires have consumed approximately 44,000 hectares across Turkey, as per the European Forest Fire Information System. The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires worldwide are attributed to various phenomena predicted by scientists due to global warming.

Factors such as rising temperatures, more frequent heatwaves, and reduced rainfall in some areas create ideal conditions for wildfires, which spread more easily when vegetation and soil are excessively dry.
