Reports emerged today of a missile strike targeting the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the occupied city of Sevastopol, resulting in the deaths of senior Russian generals and causing injuries to several others. Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Chief, Kirilo Budanov, confirmed the attack, stating that nine individuals were killed and 16 were wounded in the strike.
Budanov revealed that among the injured were high-ranking officials, including Colonel General Romanshuk, the commander of Russian forces in the Zaporizhia region, and their Chief of Staff, General Tsikov. However, he did not confirm the reported death of Admiral Viktor Sokolov, the commander of the Black Sea Fleet, due to a lack of information regarding his status.
Sevastopol, located in the disputed Crimean Peninsula, was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian military bases and facilities, including air defenses in Crimea. The strike on the Russian Black Sea Fleet's headquarters marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
In a related development, the Military Administration of the Kherson region reported that Russian forces bombarded the area extensively, with 119 incidents recorded within the past 24 hours. Oleksandr Brokodin, the head of the administration, stated that Russian forces used artillery, drones, mortar shells, tanks, and fighters, firing a total of 598 shells at Kherson. The attacks targeted residential areas, resulting in one fatality and three injuries.
The Crimean Peninsula has been a source of ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine since the annexation. The international community widely condemned Russia's actions, and the annexation remains unrecognized by Ukraine. The recent missile strike in Sevastopol and the intensified bombardment in Kherson signify an escalation in the conflict between the two countries.
