A dead whale believed to be a humpback has been discovered off the coast of Denmark near the island of Anholt, prompting speculation that it could be the whale known as “Timmy” that recently underwent a high-profile rescue operation in northern Europe.

According to Danish media reports, the whale was spotted approximately 75 metres from the shoreline and is estimated to measure between 10 and 15 metres in length.

Officials from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency believe the animal had been dead for some time before it was discovered and announced plans to retrieve the carcass.

The sighting has renewed attention on Timmy, a young humpback whale that captured international interest after repeatedly becoming stranded along the German Baltic coast earlier this year.

The whale, first spotted near Germany in March, underwent multiple rescue attempts as its health deteriorated after spending weeks trapped in shallow waters far from its natural Atlantic habitat.

Following public pressure, rescue teams eventually transported the whale by barge and released it into the North Sea off the Danish coast earlier this month after an extensive recovery operation.

Marine experts had warned at the time that the whale’s condition was already severely weakened due to repeated strandings and prolonged exposure to shallow coastal waters.

Danish authorities previously stated they would not intervene if the whale became stranded again, describing beaching events as a natural phenomenon and cautioning against unnecessary human interference with marine wildlife.
