The Mufti of Damascus, Sheikh Mohammed Adnan Al-Afyouni, died on Thursday evening in the countryside of the capital city when his car exploded, according to the official Syrian News Agency, "SANA".
“SANA” quoted the Ministry of Endowments saying that Al-Afyouni died “when an explosive device planted in his car exploded” in the town of Qudsaya, northwest of the capital.
“Al-Afyouni played a vital role during the Syrian conflict in implementing the settlement agreements between opposition militants and government forces in Damascus countryside and its towns,” according to a correspondent in Syria.
The Syrian authorities did not make any accusation against certain parties over the Mufti assassination.
In September 2016, the Syrian Mufti performed the prayer attended by Syrian President Bashar al- Assad in a rare public appearance to celebrate Eid Al-Adha in Daraya, on the outskirts of Damascus.
