The Czech Republic plans to introduce a nationwide ban on mobile phone use in classrooms, with the new rules set to take effect from September 2027.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said the government has agreed on draft legislation with Education Minister Robert Plaga that would prohibit mobile phone use for all students of compulsory school age during lessons.
The measure comes amid growing international concern over the impact of excessive smartphone use on children's learning, mental health, and social development.
Officials say the ban is intended to reduce digital distractions, improve classroom focus, and strengthen direct interaction between teachers and students. Supporters also argue it could help curb cyberbullying and promote better well-being among pupils.
The proposal is expected to spark nationwide debate before its planned implementation, with discussions likely to focus on balancing educational benefits with students' communication and safety needs in emergencies.
