The Czech Republic has announced the partial closure of its border with Slovakia starting at midnight on Thursday due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among livestock.

According to the Czech News Agency, citing the Ministry of the Interior, restrictions will be enforced at several border crossings.

Freight transport between the two countries will be limited to four designated checkpoints, where disinfectant measures will be mandatory. Additionally, the Czech government has temporarily banned the import of livestock from Slovakia.

Slovakia declared a state of emergency on March 25 following the outbreak, marking the country’s first reported cases of the disease in 50 years.

The government has implemented nationwide measures to contain the spread, particularly after recent cases were detected on a farm in Dunajská Streda, a western region close to previously affected areas.

Authorities had already introduced emergency measures last week after infections were confirmed at three cattle farms in Medveďov, Narád, and Baka in southern Slovakia.

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects livestock, posing significant risks to the agricultural sector.

Both Slovak and Czech authorities are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.
