Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides stressed the need to speed up ongoing procedures with Egypt to finalize the remaining agreements related to the Aphrodite gas field. His remarks came during a meeting in Nicosia with Javier La Rosa, Chevron’s President for Base Assets and Emerging Countries, who is visiting Cyprus before travelling to Egypt.

President Christodoulides welcomed La Rosa and underlined that Chevron’s continued presence in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone represents a strong vote of confidence—not only in Cyprus but also in Europe’s wider energy security. He added that the region holds significant potential to emerge as an alternative energy source for the European market.

Reflecting on developments since their last encounter in New York in September, Christodoulides noted that the energy sector has advanced rapidly. He said it is now essential to finalise all outstanding arrangements with Egypt “as soon as possible” to allow the start of operations at the Aphrodite gas deposit. He ended by emphasising that both sides must intensify their efforts to turn these plans into action.
