Cyprus has dispatched 1,200 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea through Israel’s Ashdod port, the Cypriot Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.
The shipment, which was pre-screened before departure, will not undergo additional security checks upon arrival in Ashdod. International relief organization World Central Kitchen will be responsible for handling and distributing the aid.
According to the ministry, the entire operation is being carried out under the supervision of the United Nations delivery mechanism.
Gaza has been devastated by nearly two years of ongoing conflict, with local health authorities reporting more than 61,000 Palestinian deaths. The Israeli air and ground campaign has also triggered a severe hunger crisis, with aid facing long delays in reaching those in need. Gaza’s health officials state that over 200 people have already died from malnutrition and starvation.
The bulk of this aid shipment was contributed by Cyprus and Malta, alongside support from organizations and partners in the United States, Italy, Kuwait, and the Sovereign Order of Malta. The UAE also played a key role in making the operation possible.
Cyprus, situated in the eastern Mediterranean, has been used previously as a staging point for delivering aid to Gaza. The foreign ministry reaffirmed that its facilities remain at the disposal of the international community as an additional humanitarian corridor.
