President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, held a telephone conversation on Friday with the President of the European Council, António Costa, ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting scheduled for October 23. During the call, the two leaders exchanged views on the items on the meeting’s agenda.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, President Christodoulides provided a detailed overview of recent developments in the Middle East, highlighting the importance of the agreement concerning Gaza and the need for its immediate and comprehensive implementation, in line with the 20-point plan presented by the President of the United States.

In this context, President Christodoulides informed Costa of the six-point proposal put forward by the Republic of Cyprus, which he initially presented at the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit and more recently shared with the President of the European Commission. As Letymbiotis noted, the Cypriot initiative focuses on three key pillars, the humanitarian dimension, security, and reconstruction. It offers a complementary framework for implementing specific aspects of the US President’s 20-point plan.

President Christodoulides also stated his intention to present the Cypriot initiative in detail to the EU Heads of State or Government during the European Council meeting, stressing that the EU’s active involvement in the next phase of the agreement’s implementation is of critical importance.

Furthermore, President Christodoulides expressed the view that the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, during the first half of 2026, could serve as a vehicle to further elevate the Union’s role in the region, particularly in matters of peace, stability, and reconstruction.

The Government Spokesperson also said that President Christodoulides welcomed the convening of the first EU-Egypt Summit on the sidelines of the European Council meeting. He underscored Egypt’s role as a cornerstone of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, and emphasized that strengthening EU cooperation with Egypt, as well as with other regional actors, is essential for advancing regional peace and security.

The Republic of Cyprus will assume for a second time the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st, 2026, for a period of six months, as part of a Trio Presidency along with Poland and Denmark.

Finally, President Christodoulides stressed the urgent need to proceed with the disbursement of the second financial assistance package to Egypt, noting that this support is vital for maintaining stability in the EU’s southern neighbourhood.
