A powerful cyclone has struck New Zealand’s North Island, cutting power to thousands of homes and forcing hundreds of residents to evacuate, as officials warn that conditions are expected to worsen.
The storm, identified as Cyclone Faiyano by MetService, brought destructive winds exceeding 130 km/h, heavy rainfall, and high waves even before its expected landfall on Sunday afternoon.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in several regions and issued rare red wind warnings, which are reserved for the most severe weather conditions.
Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell said the cyclone is moving toward the outer areas of the North Island, reducing the impact on Auckland, the country’s largest city. However, stronger winds and higher waves are expected as the storm reaches coastal areas.
Officials expect the cyclone to intensify further over the next 12 hours, increasing the risk of damage and disruption.
The storm has already forced hundreds of evacuations and caused power outages affecting around 5,000 homes. Electricity has been restored to approximately 2,000 households, while efforts continue to reconnect the remaining areas.
