The death toll from Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which lasted an unusually long time in southeast Africa, has risen to 522, authorities in Malawi, Mozambique, and Madagascar said on Saturday.

The Disaster Management Authority announced that Malawi, the worst affected by the cyclone, recorded a death toll rising to 438.

About 345,000 people in the country were affected by the rains, floods, and landslides, and tens of thousands of people were displaced.

The hurricane caused great damage in southeastern Africa, and neighbouring Mozambique and the island of Madagascar were affected.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi stated that at least 67 people have died in the country, and 17 people have died in Madagascar.

The cyclone made its first landfall on February 21 in Madagascar.

From there, the cyclone moved to Mozambique and then back across the Indian Ocean.

He arrived in Mozambique for the second time on March 11 and then moved on to Malawi.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the storm, which has lasted for more than a month, is likely to be the longest-lasting hurricane since weather records began.

The hurricane was declared a hurricane on February 6.

Southern Africa is currently going through the cyclone season, which can bring rains and severe storms until March or April.
