Authorities in the US state of New Jersey have imposed a nightly curfew around a migrant detention facility in response to escalating tensions between protesters and law enforcement.
Demonstrations have continued outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, coinciding with a hunger strike launched by detainees on May 22 over what they describe as inhumane detention conditions.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters, while a smaller group supporting government immigration policies also gathered at the site.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said the curfew will remain in effect from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily until further notice. He added that several people had been arrested and weapons were seized from some individuals.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill ordered enhanced security measures around the facility and urged protesters to avoid further escalation.
The US Department of Homeland Security denied allegations of poor treatment and inadequate healthcare, stating that detainees receive meals, medical care, and access to legal procedures.
Around 300 migrants are currently being held at the Delaney Hall facility amid ongoing scrutiny of detention conditions.
