Cuba Responds to US Policy Changes Amid Ongoing Blockade

On January 14, 2025, the US government announced significant shifts in its approach towards Cuba, including the removal of Cuba from the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism, the halting of lawsuits tied to the Helms-Burton Act, and the elimination of a restricted list barring US financial transactions with certain Cuban entities.

Although these measures point in the right direction, they remain limited in scope and do not address the ongoing economic blockade.

Cuba expressed its gratitude for the support of international governments, organizations, and individuals who have long advocated for these changes.

However, the Cuban government emphasized that the economic blockade and many other coercive measures, which continue to damage the economy and affect the population, remain in place.

These policies, along with extraterritorial impacts, violate international law and the human rights of all Cubans.

The Cuban government highlighted the ongoing illegal persecution of its fuel supplies, international medical cooperation agreements, and foreign financial transactions.

US citizens, companies, and subsidiaries are still barred from trading with Cuba, while foreign entities face harassment and intimidation for potential cooperation with the island nation.

These actions contribute to Cuba's continued economic challenges and the incentive for emigration.

Cuba underscored that the recent US policy change is long overdue and should have been implemented as a basic act of justice.

The Cuban government reiterated its position against US economic warfare, interference programs, and disinformation campaigns, all funded by the US taxpayer.

Despite these challenges, Cuba remains open to respectful dialogue and relations with the US, based on mutual respect and non-interference.
