The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, said in a statement to CNN that the court is seeking to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the October 7 attack and the Gaza war, and also against the leader of the Hamas movement. Yahya Al-Sanwar.
Karim Khan said, in an interview with CNN, that the International Criminal Court is also seeking arrest warrants against two other senior Hamas leaders, the leader of the Al-Qassam Brigades, known as Muhammad Al-Deif, and the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh.
The arrest warrants against Israeli politicians represent the first time the International Criminal Court has targeted the United States' largest and closest ally.
A panel of International Criminal Court judges will consider Khan's request to issue arrest warrants
Khan said the charges against Sinwar, Haniyeh, and Al-Deif include “extermination, murder, hostage-taking, rape, and sexual assault while in detention.”
“The world was shocked on October 7 when people were taken from their bedrooms, from their homes, from the various kibbutzim in Israel,” Khan told Amanpour, adding that “people suffered greatly.”
Khan added that the charges against Netanyahu and Gallant include "causing genocide, causing famine as a means of war, including withholding humanitarian relief supplies, and deliberately targeting civilians in conflict."
