A construction worker assembling the structures for Lebanese-Colombian superstar Shakira‘s upcoming Brazil concert died in a stage accident on Sunday, concert organizers announced.

Translated from Portuguese, the concert’s official Instagram account said, “The event organizers confirm that an accident this Sunday afternoon (April 26th) tragically claimed the life of a professional who was working on assembling the structures for the show. First responders provided initial care at the scene, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional passed away at the hospital. At this time, we are providing all support, comfort, and solidarity to the responsible company, its team, and the victim’s family.”

Additionally, the state fire brigade told People the male “worker suffered crushing injuries to his lower limbs in a lifting system.”

The person was “removed from the equipment by other employees present … before the arrival of emergency teams.”

The statement confirmed, “Military personnel from the ambulance service of the 3rd Maritime Group (GMAR-Copacabana) immediately began pre-hospital care on the victim, who was then transported to the Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital. Despite the efforts of the rescue teams, death was confirmed.”

According to witness Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, the victim was “trapped underneath” a structure that fell down “on the ground.”

The beachgoer (via France24) noted that “out of nowhere [he] saw people running” as individuals worked to “pull out” the man.

In February, the singer, 49, was named as the headliner for this year’s Todo Mundo No Rio in Brazil, a major free concert held in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, on May 2.

Shakira gushed over the upcoming performance via Instagram on Saturday.

“Almost there, Rio!!!” the Grammy winner captioned snaps of herself sans shirt covering up with a fan.

“Prepping so many surprises for you: guest artists, new wardrobe, songs you’ll love to hear,” she added. “Can’t wait to be there.”

This year marks the third annual concert after Madonna kicked it off in 2024 with a record-breaking 1.6 million people in attendance, the largest crowd of her career.

Lady Gaga followed that up in 2025 with a massive performance to 2.5 million people, making it the biggest of her career and the largest concert for a solo female artist in history.

Madonna concert generated more than $60 million for the local economy, while Lady Gaga’s performance poured $109 million to the city.
