The Israel-Gaza war has resulted in numerous journalists being killed, injured, detained, or missing since Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel on October 7.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said that it is investigating now all reports of casualties in the war, including those that occurred in neighboring Lebanon. It mentioned that at least 19 journalists have lost their lives, along with more than 4,000 other individuals on both sides of the conflict. In addition, hundreds of people were killed in a hospital blast in Gaza on Tuesday.

"As of October 18: 19 journalists were confirmed dead: 15 Palestinian, 3 Israeli, and 1 Lebanese. - 8 journalists were reported injured. - 3 journalists were reported missing or detained."

According to CPJ, Journalists in Gaza are at particularly high risk as they try to cover the conflict in the face of a ground assault by Israeli troops, devastating Israeli airstrikes, disrupted communications, and extensive power outages.

CPJ emphasizes that during times of crisis, journalists are civilians doing important work and must not be targeted by warring parties.

Sherif Mansour, CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator, said: “Journalists across the region are making great sacrifices to cover this heartbreaking conflict. All parties must take steps to ensure their safety.”
