Court Upholds Death Sentence for Nayera Ashraf’s Murderer Mohamed Adel

On Thursday, Egypt’s Cassation Court upheld the death sentence for Mansoura University student Nayera Ashraf’s murderer Mohamed Adel.

The cassation court rejected the appeal of Adel’s defense team after hearing arguments from four lawyers against the death sentence issued in July 2022.

The rulings cannot be appealed.

The Mansoura Criminal court found Mohamed Adel guilty of slaughtering and murdering his colleague Nayera Ashraf on the 20th of June in front of the gates of Mansoura University. The crime shocked Egyptian society as it was recorded on CCTV cameras.

During the trial, the prosecution presented to the court 25 eyewitnesses, including students and university guards who witnessed the stabbing of the 21-year-old student outside the gates of her University in Nile Delta city of Mansoura.

Furthermore, the prosecution presented the testimonies of the victim's friends and colleagues, all of whom testified that the accused stalked and threatened the victim after rejecting his marriage proposal. The prosecution also stated that Nayera's family had previously filed several complaints at local police stations against the accused.

The Prosecution also presented to the court the detailed confessions of the accused as evidence, in addition to the victim's cell phone records and text messages that included death threats to Ashraf.

It also introduced evidence footage of the incident from CCTV cameras around the university.
