Germany recorded a sharp rise in the daily number of deaths from COVID-19, reaching 952 cases during the last 24 hours, the highest daily increase yet, according to Reuters.

In a report, the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases said that 27,728 new Coronavirus cases were reported during the last 24 hours, raising the total tally of confirmed cases in the European country to 1,379,238.

The total death toll in Germany has reached 23,427.

Earlier, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, expressed her concern about the current situation of the new Coronavirus pandemic in her country, adding that she expects the coming January and February months to be "very difficult."

In a televised statement last Monday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced that the country will implement, starting from Wednesday, the most stringent lockdown throughout the country's history, stressing the seriousness of the epidemiological situation.
