Ethiopia registered on Sunday three new coronavirus cases, raising the toll of the infected people to 19, the Ethiopian Health Ministry said.
In a statement, Ethiopian Health Minister Lia Tadesse Gebremedhin said that the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) conducted 87 tests in the past 24 hours from which three additional COVID-19 cases have been confirmed, bringing the total cases to 19, according to Africa News.
"One of the three new cases is a 28-year-old female Ethiopian, who traveled to Brussels, Belgium, and Cameroon on March 17 and 19, respectively," the Ethiopian minister added.
The other two cases are 14-year-old boy and a 48-year-old female who are members of one family residing in Adama Town. They were in close contact with previously confirmed case.
Earlier on Friday, Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde granted pardon to more than 4,000 prisoners to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, in accordance with article 71/7 of Ethiopia's constitution.
Sahle-Work Zewde announced the order in a tweet on Wednesday, saying that it would help prevent overcrowding in prisons.
She added that the directive only covers those given a maximum sentence of three years for minor crimes and those who were about to be released from jail.
