Until this morning, WorldMeter.com data showed that more than 18 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus pandemic in the world.

According to the statistics of the site, the total number of cases reached 18 million and more than 23 thousand, while about 689 thousand of them died, while more than 11.3 million recovered.

The United States remains the most affected country with 4.7 million infected people, followed by Brazil (2.7 million), India (1.7 million), Russia (845 thousand) and South Africa (503 thousand).

The Ministry of Health in Johannesburg had indicated earlier that the number of confirmed cases exceeded half a million in South Africa, while the total infections in Africa are close to one million.

So far, just over three million people have been tested for the coronavirus in South Africa, the largest industrialized country in the continent, which confirmed its first case since five months. The number of deaths in the country was 8,153 cases.

On the other hand, a Reuters statistics showed that the number of deaths in Latin America due to the virus exceeded 200,000 as of yesterday, which confirms the status of the region as one of the world's hardest-hit areas of the pandemic that places very big pressure on governments.

A few days ago, Brazil set a daily record of 1,595 deaths from the virus and 1,088 other deaths on Saturday. Yesterday, Mexico recorded 784 deaths, and for the first time over 9000 new cases.

On the other side of the Pacific, Victoria, Australia's second largest state in terms of population, declared a state of disaster and imposed an overnight curfew in the capital, Melbourne, as part of the most severe restrictions it has been imposed so far to contain the Coronavirus.

Melbourne, Australia's second largest city, has already reimposed a lockdown for six weeks while making strenuous efforts to curb the spread of the disease after record numbers of people infected with the Coronavirus last week.

Yesterday, Victoria recorded 671 infections, as well as seven deaths. Officials said that the transmission of community infections in large numbers and the lack of knowledge of the source of the cases caused the government to impose new restrictions that will continue for six weeks.
