The Democratic Republic of the Congo has filed a case against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice, accusing Kigali of genocide and widespread human rights abuses linked to its alleged support for armed groups operating in eastern Congo.
Kinshasa claims Rwanda violated international conventions on genocide, racial discrimination and torture by backing rebel movements and directing unlawful military operations on Congolese territory.
Congolese authorities said the alleged crimes, committed since 1996, targeted Hutu communities and other ethnic groups and included massacres, extrajudicial killings, torture, sexual violence, forced displacement and discrimination.
Congo is seeking an ICJ ruling ordering Rwanda to halt the alleged violations and provide reparations. The court said the lawsuit accuses Rwanda of carrying out a campaign of genocide and serious human rights abuses in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo over nearly three decades.
Rwanda has repeatedly denied allegations that it supports rebel groups active in eastern Congo.
