The death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has exceeded 200, raising concerns about a rapidly escalating public health emergency, African health authorities said.
According to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, confirmed Ebola fatalities have reached 204, including deaths reported in Uganda, while total confirmed cases have climbed to 894, with 875 recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Health officials said the number of infections reported during the first month of the outbreak is the highest ever recorded for Ebola over a similar period, exceeding the second-largest outbreak by nearly threefold.
Authorities also expressed concern over limited contact tracing efforts. Only about 4,100 contacts are currently being monitored, despite estimates that nearly 35,000 people may have been exposed to infected individuals.
Officials warned that the outbreak remains far from under control, highlighting the risk of further spread unless surveillance and containment measures are significantly strengthened.
