An official document published by South Africa's opposition Democratic Alliance confirmed that the Johannesburg government would have arrested Russian President Vladimir Putin if he had entered the country, according to an affidavit issued by the Ministry of Justice in South Africa.

After months of ambiguity, South Africa and Russia announced this week that Putin will not travel to South Africa to attend the BRICS summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, and China, in Johannesburg from August 22 to August 24, but will participate via video.

The Democratic Alliance and human rights group Amnesty International have filed a lawsuit in the Pretoria High Court to force the government to arrest Putin if he enters the country.

Sheila Mohamed, Executive Director of Amnesty International in South Africa, described the statement as a victory for the rule of law and international justice, but most important for the victims in Ukraine.

It is noteworthy that there is an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued against Putin on charges of committing war crimes in Ukraine amid the comprehensive invasion that he launched against Ukraine about 17 months ago.
