Brian Oliver, the Boulder fire Chief, said the night shelter was opened after 8,000 homes and 7,000 buildings were evacuated without any buildings being damaged, noting that officials expect it will take several days to deal with the blaze.
Last year's wildfire occurred near the site of the current one, destroying more than 1,000 homes.
Town officials assured residents in an email that they had no concerns so far.
The Boulder Sheriff's Office said the flames were moving from south to southeast toward Eldorado Springs.
Eldorado Canyon State Park has closed and authorities have ordered people who hike or climb the area to evacuate.
University of Colorado Boulder police also evacuated the southern campus and police blocked westbound traffic on roads near the fire.
