Colombian President Gustavo Petro said he survived an apparent assassination attempt after security concerns forced his helicopter to divert from landing on the Caribbean coast late Tuesday.

Petro revealed that the aircraft was unable to land at its planned destination due to fears that unidentified individuals were preparing to open fire.

Speaking during a government meeting broadcast live, the president said the helicopter crew was forced to head out to sea for nearly four hours before reaching an alternative location to avoid a potential attack.

The Colombian leader noted that he had received warnings for months about an alleged plot targeting him, reportedly linked to drug trafficking groups.

According to initial reports, the incident occurred while Petro was traveling to the Caribbean region.

Authorities have not yet released further operational details or confirmed suspects connected to the alleged threat.

The development comes amid heightened security concerns in Colombia, where the government has been dealing with organized crime networks and drug trafficking groups.

Officials have not announced any arrests related to the incident. Security agencies are expected to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the helicopter diversion and the alleged assassination plot.

Petro has not reported any injuries, and government operations are continuing as normal following the incident.
