Colombia has expressed keen interest in becoming a full member of the BRICS bloc at the earliest opportunity.
This aspiration was affirmed in a joint statement by Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The announcement follows a statement by Grigory Karasin, head of the Russian Federation Council's Committee on International Affairs, indicating a growing interest from over 40 countries seeking to join the BRICS bloc.
In their joint statement, Presidents Petro and Lula emphasized Colombia's eagerness to join BRICS and Brazil's commitment to supporting its candidacy.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry published the statement, affirming Colombia's desire for full membership.
This development comes after Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates officially joined BRICS alongside Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as full members on January 1, 2024.
