Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang announced that the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region has introduced its first Level-4 autonomous minibus, a significant step in the development of intelligent transportation in western China. The launch took place in Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, signalling China’s increasing drive to advance self-driving technologies and urban innovation.
According to Ambassador Liao, the minibus—measuring 4.3 metres—has been specifically designed for short-range travel, logistics, sanitation, and delivery services. It carries seven passengers and one safety officer, operating without traditional controls like a steering wheel, brakes, or rear-view mirrors.
Despite its minimalistic form, the vehicle navigates smoothly, recognises traffic signals with precision, and executes agile turns—a testament to China’s rapidly evolving autonomous driving capabilities.
Ambassador Liao added that Changji Hui Prefecture is planning to establish a local assembly line for these vehicles, with the intention of scaling up production and diversifying their use in various urban scenarios.
The ambassador emphasised that this achievement reflects how China's innovation is transforming public transport and integrating smart mobility solutions into daily life.
