China's population has declined for the third consecutive year, according to the Chinese government, marking a significant demographic challenge for the world's second-largest population.

The country, now facing an aging population and a labor force shortage, reported a decrease of 1.39 million people by the end of 2024, with the total population standing at 1.408 billion.

These figures reflect global trends, particularly in East Asia, where countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong have seen sharp declines in birth rates.

Three years ago, China joined Japan and much of Eastern Europe in experiencing a drop in population, underscoring the growing demographic challenges the region faces.

The decline signals potential economic and social impacts, as an aging population and shrinking workforce may put pressure on the country's future growth and productivity.
