According to a survey released on Friday by the China Internet Network Information Center, China's online population surpassed one billion in June, up 21.75 million from December. Of the total, 469 million netizens use the internet to order food, a significant increase, according to the report.

It added that since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the quick delivery business, particularly in fresh food and medicine, has grown significantly, benefiting people and stabilizing the economy alongside regular food and beverage takeaway.

According to the report, 28% of internet users aged 50 and older used the internet in June, up 5.2 percentage points from June 2020.

Because the number of elderly internet users is growing, the State Council, China's Cabinet, and relevant government ministries have issued instructions to make it easier for them to access the internet, according to the report.

Last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a decree requiring the adaptation of 115 websites and 43 smartphone applications to address the issues experienced by the elderly and disabled when using smart technology.

It was also requested that internet companies make pandemic control online services more accessible to the elderly, as well as increase barrier-free functions for the disabled in maps, news, and other apps, according to the statement, with the goal of ensuring that scientific and technological innovation could be shared by all.
