Following the recent Astana Summit, China has officially taken over the rotating presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for the 2024-2025 term, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Mao Ning, the spokesperson for the Ministry, announced at a press conference, "After the Astana Summit in July, China has formally assumed the rotating presidency of the SCO for the 2024-2025 period and will host the summit in 2025 as per tradition."
Mao emphasized China's commitment to its leadership role, highlighting that preparations are already in full swing.
She noted that the SCO has evolved into a comprehensive regional cooperation organization, covering the largest area and population globally.
"The organization is a prime example of efforts to create a new type of international relations, offering significant theoretical and practical insights into building a community with a shared future for humanity," Mao stated.
Over the next 12 months, China plans to work closely with SCO partners in areas such as politics, security, economy, and culture.
Mao underlined China's intention to leverage its presidency to foster solidarity, mutual trust, peace, prosperity, development, and good neighborliness among SCO member states.
Additionally, China aims to contribute to regional and global peace and stability through its leadership role in the SCO.
