China announced that 5,280 people were infected with the Coronavirus (known also as COVID-19) today, Tuesday.
The newly reported toll is the highest daily number since the outbreak of the pandemic, and more than double the number of infections from the previous day.
According to the National Health Commission, the northeastern province of Jilin is the most affected, with more than three thousand injuries.
Since the first detection of the Coronavirus in Wuhan in late 2019, China has succeeded in curbing large outbreaks through its “zero Covid” strategy, which includes strict closures that restrict the movement of large groups of the population.
But Tuesday was the sixth consecutive day in which more than a thousand injuries were recorded in the second-largest economy in the world.
Chinese authorities have locked down at least 11 cities across the country due to the latest outbreak, including Shenzhen, a tech stronghold of 17 million people.
Flight tracking websites showed that dozens of domestic flights were canceled at Beijing and Shanghai airports on Tuesday morning.
