China has reportedly suggested hosting a high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Chinese officials allegedly approached Trump’s team through intermediaries, proposing a US-Russia summit aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine.
However, the proposal notably excludes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, raising questions about its viability.
Despite its involvement, Beijing is keen to ensure that any mediation efforts do not jeopardize its strategic ties with Moscow, the report noted.
The White House has neither confirmed nor denied receiving the proposal. Meanwhile, an unnamed US official expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of such an initiative.
The report comes shortly after a February 12 phone call between Trump and Putin, during which both leaders discussed Ukraine’s future.
According to the Kremlin, Trump expressed support for an early ceasefire, while Putin underscored the need to address the root causes of the conflict.
Trump later wrote on Truth Social that Moscow and Washington would “immediately begin negotiations” on resolving the crisis—potentially signaling a shift in diplomatic strategy.
