The government of China announced Sunday that citizens of the United Kingdom and Canada will be exempt from visa requirements starting February 17, expanding Beijing’s travel policy to boost tourism and business ties.

According to China’s Foreign Ministry, holders of ordinary passports from the UK and Canada will be permitted to enter China without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. The exemption applies to travel for business, tourism, visiting family and friends, exchanges, or transit purposes.

The visa free policy will remain in effect through December 31.

The move follows official visits to Beijing by representatives from both countries, during which the measure was initially announced.

The policy is expected to facilitate short term travel, encourage economic engagement, and strengthen diplomatic and people to people exchanges.

China has gradually expanded visa free access to several countries as part of a broader effort to revive inbound tourism and international business travel following pandemic era restrictions.
