More than 40,000 people in China's Sichuan province have been evacuated because of floods, state media reported on Wednesday.

Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province, issued a red alert, the highest in a four-tier warning system, for heavy rain, while several areas reported heavy rain.

China's state news agency Xinhua reported that meteorological agencies had extended a rainstorm warning until Thursday for several provinces.

The National Meteorological Center said that some of these areas may witness more than 70 millimeters of rain falling within one hour, in addition to thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail.

Officials frequently warn of severe weather and geographic disasters during July.
