China announced detecting three cases with the new COVID-19 variant known as 'Mu,' media agencies reported on Friday.
The three cases are two women, and a boy. The first two cases are a 22-year-old woman and a 19-year-old boy who was coming to China from Colombia. The third is a 26 year-old-woman and she was coming from the US.
The new variant could be resistant to available COVID-19 vaccines as it carries various stages of mutations, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Moreover, the total of reported cases with the new variant reached 4500 cases around the world.
'Mu' was identified for the first time in Colombia in January 2021, and it was detected in 39 countries until now. In addition, WHO named the new strain as a "variant of interest, according to AFP.
This variant is still under study, so, its ability to resist the protection given to humans by the vaccine is not confirmed yet.
It is worthy to mention that the world is still suffering from the emergence of Delta, Delta Plus, and Lambda variants which drove several countries to list a third COVID-19 vaccine dose to all fully vaccinated persons.
