China has voiced firm support for Egypt’s sovereignty over the Suez Canal following controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested American ships should be allowed to use the strategic waterway free of charge due to the United States’ historical contributions.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to a question from "Beijing Youth Daily" regarding Trump’s post on his Truth Social account.
In the post, Trump asserted that “American Ships, both Military and Commercial, should be allowed to travel, free of charge, through the Panama and Suez Canals,” claiming those canals “would not exist without the United States of America.”
He further stated that he had instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to “immediately take care of the situation.”
In response, Lin Jian said, “We noted relevant reports. Egypt has indisputable sovereignty over and right to manage and operate the Suez Canal. We firmly support the Egyptian government and people in defending sovereignty and their legitimate rights and interests.”
He added, “We oppose any acts or statements of bullying.”
