Chile and Mexico have added their voices to the growing chorus of calls for an investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the war between Israel and Gaza, which left thousands dead, according to the French Press Agency.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement citing "growing concern about the recent escalation of violence, especially against civilian targets, and the continued alleged commission of crimes falling within the jurisdiction of the Court, specifically since the October 7, 2023 attack carried out by Hamas militants and subsequent acts of aggression."

Chile's Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren stated at a press conference in Santiago that his country supports "an investigation into any potential war crimes, whether committed by Israelis or Palestinians."

The International Criminal Court initiated an investigation into Israel, Hamas, and other Palestinian armed factions for alleged war crimes in the Palestinian territories in 2021.

In November, the ICC's Chief Prosecutor, Karim Khan, announced an expansion of the investigation to include the recent escalation of hostilities and violence since the October 7, 2023 attacks.

These statements come following calls from South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Comoros, and Djibouti for the ICC to investigate the war between Hamas and Israel, despite Israel not being a member of the court.
