South African-American actress Charlize Theron announced Wednesday the sequel to her Netflix blockbuster "The Old Guard".
In a statement, Theron added that the script for the much-awaited follow-up movie was complete.
The actress added that the sequel will begin production in early 2022 with Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli reprising their roles.
"The Old Guard" is based on the 2017 graphic novel by Greg Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez.
The movie was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and featured Theron as Andy, a nearly immortal mercenary who helps protect humanity.
It became one of Netflix's biggest hits upon its release in 2020. The success of the first movie immediately pushed all parties involved to begin discussing the possibility of a sequel.
