An increasing number of individuals, ranging from celebrities to members of civil society, are offering unprecedented support for UNRWA, the United Nations agency that provides essential assistance to two million Palestinians in war-affected Gaza.
Since October of last year, the agency has successfully raised nearly $150 million through contributions from UNRWA Spain, UNRWA USA, various foundations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporations, and private individuals.
Some donors have even chosen to double or triple their contributions, as noted by Karim Amer, the agency's Director of Partnerships, in an interview with UN News prior to the International Day of Charity, which is commemorated annually on September 5.
“Every donation is significant, regardless of its size,” Amer emphasized.
“Your contributions are making a difference for tens of thousands of families enduring loss, displacement, injuries, and persistent anxiety and fear.”
For the financially constrained agency, this surge in support is vital. UNRWA faced a loss of $450 million when 16 donor nations halted their funding following allegations from the Israeli Government in January that a dozen employees were implicated in the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 in southern Israel, which ignited the current conflict.
The United Nations promptly initiated an investigation, which concluded in August. The findings suggested that, if verified, there could be indications of involvement from nine staff members. In light of this, UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini has opted to terminate their contracts in the agency's best interest.
All donors, with the exception of the United States, have since reinstated their funding.
Numerous musical artists are launching songs in support of Palestine, with all streaming revenues directed to UNRWA. In April, Mexican singer Marianina released "From Palestine to Mexico." Additionally, Canadian violinist Jessica Moss premiered "For UNRWA" during a concert in Berlin in February.
US rapper Macklemore, a four-time Grammy Award winner, is donating all streaming proceeds from his popular track "Hind’s Hall" to UNRWA. This song gained significant attention on social media following its release in early May.
Macklemore, one of those celebrities who always voices solidarity with Palestinians and donates to them, said during his last concert in New Zealand: “I stand here today and every day forward for the rest of my life in solidarity with the people of Palestine, with an open heart in belief that our collective liberty is stake, that we all deserve freedom in this life of ours.”
