The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) and the Cyprus Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at CEDARE Headquarters in Cairo, marking an important step toward strengthening scientific cooperation and regional collaboration to address climate change challenges across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The event also marked the official announcement of CEDARE’s membership in the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change (RSA-CC), a regional platform that brings together leading research institutions, universities, scientific centres, and knowledge organizations from across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Alliance aims to strengthen scientific cooperation, facilitate knowledge and data exchange, promote science diplomacy, and support the development of innovative solutions to shared climate challenges.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of CEDARE, and Prof. Stavros Malas, President of the Cyprus Institute, in the presence of Prof. Fadi Comair, Professor of Applied Hydrology and Coordinator of the Water Task Force under the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative (EMME-CCI), Ms. Rafaella Pellioti, Institutional Affairs Officer at the Cyprus Institute, as well as experts and representatives from both institutions.

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including scientific research, knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the development and implementation of joint projects. It also promotes collaboration in organizing technical workshops and training programmes, supporting climate adaptation and resilience initiatives, advancing water security and sustainable natural resource management, and jointly pursuing regional and international project opportunities.

Through its membership in the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change, CEDARE will contribute to strengthening the science-policy interface, supporting the generation of evidence-based knowledge for climate adaptation and resilience, building the capacities of researchers and decision-makers, and advancing collaborative regional initiatives addressing priority issues such as water scarcity, desertification, heatwaves, air quality, and coastal and marine ecosystems.

This collaboration comes at a critical time as the region faces increasing climate-related challenges, including rising temperatures, growing water scarcity, land degradation, and more frequent extreme weather events. These challenges highlight the importance of enhanced regional scientific cooperation and the development of innovative, research-based solutions.

The partnership between CEDARE and the Cyprus Institute, together with CEDARE’s membership in the Regional Scientific Alliance for Climate Change, reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to advancing regional climate action, strengthening scientific partnerships, and promoting sustainable development and climate resilience across the region.
