As part of the 5th Edition of the Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) Week, and in line with Egypt’s leadership of the PCRD agenda within the African Union (AU), the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) convened a high-level roundtable titled “Rebuilding for Peace: Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development in the Greater Horn of Africa.” The event was held in cooperation with the AU Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development, headquartered in Egypt.
The roundtable brought together senior officials, including Ambassador Karim Sherif, the newly appointed Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Ambassador Khaled El-Shazly, Deputy Secretary-General of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, as well as representatives from the relevant departments of Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African regional organizations, the AU Commission, the League of Arab States, and the Office of the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa.
The event highlighted the growing cooperation between the CCCPA and the AU’s PCRD Center, an institution hosted and strongly supported by Egypt to bolster continental efforts in reconstruction and sustainable recovery in post-conflict settings.
The discussions focused on the complex challenges facing reconstruction efforts in the Greater Horn of Africa, examining the needs arising from ongoing and emerging conflict dynamics. Participants worked to develop actionable frameworks and practical approaches for effective engagement in reconstruction efforts, aligned with the AU’s updated PCRD policy.
Dialogue also explored mechanisms to translate the AU policy into coordinated, high-impact interventions, particularly through rapid-impact projects designed to stabilize conflict-affected communities and promote long-term resilience.
CCCPA Director Ambassador Seif Kan’deel emphasized that spotlighting the Horn of Africa aligns with both Egypt’s foreign policy priorities and the African Union’s strategic agenda, reflecting the Center’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the AU’s updated PCRD framework.
On her part, Lebakiso Mathulo, Executive Secretary of the AU PCRD Center, underscored the importance of harmonizing regional and continental efforts and reinforcing the “African solutions to African problems” approach as a cornerstone for addressing the persistent and emerging challenges across the Horn of Africa.
