Emergency crews in Italy have successfully rescued a cave explorer who became trapped 120 meters underground in a complex operation that lasted several hours.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Grotta di Cinghiali Volante cave near Garessio, where the explorer's leg became pinned beneath a rock deep inside the cave system.
Mountain rescue officials confirmed on Monday that the man, an Italian in his twenties, was freed and transported to hospital for treatment.
More than 50 rescue workers took part in the operation, which was complicated by the challenging underground environment and difficult terrain surrounding the cave.
Rescue teams eventually reached the trapped explorer, removed the rock, and safely extracted him from the site.
While still underground, emergency personnel established a temporary medical station inside the cave, where they carried out an initial health assessment before beginning the evacuation.
The successful rescue highlights the demanding nature of cave exploration and the critical role of specialized emergency teams in responding to incidents in remote and hazardous environments.
