A judicial source said today, Tuesday, that Carlos Ghosn has filed a billion-dollar compensation claim in Lebanon against Nissan, adding that the hearing will take place on September 18.
The lawsuit filed by Carlos Ghosn in Lebanon accuses Nissan and others of crimes including defamation, according to a copy of the lawsuit seen by Reuters.
The lawsuit also accuses the defendants of fabricating physical evidence.
Ghosn, once a world leader in the auto industry, was arrested in Japan in late 2018 and charged with financial misconduct.
Ghosn, the former head of Nissan and Renault denied the charge and said his detention was part of a plot by Nissan executives to block a merger deal.
It is noteworthy that the businessman, who holds French, Lebanese and Brazilian nationalities has been residing in Lebanon since December 2019, following his controversial escape from Japan, where he was awaiting trial following his arrest in 2018.
Ghosn said he fled because he did not believe he would get a fair trial in Tokyo. He also accused Nissan of colluding with prosecutors to arrest him as he sought to deepen the alliance between the Japanese company and Renault.
In 2020, Interpol issued an arrest warrant against Ghosn and informed Beirut that he was a fugitive from Japan and wanted by the Tokyo authorities for trial.
The Lebanese authorities, which are not bound by an extradition treaty with Japan, did not arrest him, but the Lebanese Public Prosecution Office interrogated him based on a red notice from Interpol to arrest him without taking any new measures against him, according to a judicial official, Monday, to Agence France-Presse.
On Monday, a Lebanese judge questioned Carlos Ghosn in Beirut about possible links to a former French government minister who was accused two years ago of passive corruption because of her work on his behalf, according to officials familiar with the case.
Lebanese officials said Ghosn denied any dealings with former French Justice Minister Rachida Dati, who was accused of providing advisory work to Ghosn for two years starting in 2010 when she was a member of the European Parliament.
Dati was charged in 2021 with “corruption by a person who at the time held an electoral mandate and abuse of power.”
The former head of Nissan and Renault denied during questioning in Beirut that Nissan paid nearly $1 million in attorneys' fees, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
