Today, rebels in Central African Republic (CAR) launched an attack on government forces in the west of the country, following the controversial victory of President Faustin Archange Touadera for a second term.

A spokesman for the United Nations Mission in CAR, "MINUSCA" Abdul Aziz Fall, said that "Armed elements" attacked government forces in Bouar, in the west of the country.

Fall added that the mission personnel came to support the government forces, and in turn, they came under fire.

The city includes Camp Leclerc, which is the headquarters of the Army in the Western Region.

The attack comes after French President Emmanuel Macron renewed his condemnation of attempts by armed groups and "Political leaders" to obstruct the electoral process.

Macron announced his position during a telephone conversation he held on Friday with Touadera, during which he referred particularly to former President François Bozizé, according to a statement by the French presidency.

On Saturday, two French fighters flew over the disputed city, in an operation aimed at showing Paris' support for government forces, according to a French military unit in the capital, Bangui.

In November, six armed groups controlling two-thirds of the country's territory announced the formation of an alliance against the Touadera government.

This coalition launched a series of attacks in an attempt to disrupt the presidential and legislative elections that were held on December 27th.

On Tuesday, opposition figures in the CAR called for the elections to be cancelled due to "Many violations."

The National Elections Commission announced that the outgoing 63-year-old president, Faustin Archange Touadera, "Won with an absolute majority" in the vote on December 27, winning 53.9 per cent.

It is noteworthy that the results must be approved by the Constitutional Court by January 19.

There are about 300 French soldiers in CAR, who are training its army and support their stance.
