Car Sales in Egypt Grow by 62% Despite Pandemic Outbreak

The Egyptian market car sales witnessed a significant hike in during the first two months of the year 2020 to register about 36.21 thousand cars compared to 22.324 thousand cars during the same period last year  with a growth of 62.2% despite repercussions of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) .

The Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC) report indicated that car sales during the month of February increased by 105.74% to 22,373 thousand cars, compared to 10.857 thousand cars during the same month in 2019.

AMIC stated that cars that were put together locally or the Completely Knocked Down "CKD" increased by 37.5% to 15,605 thousand cars during January and February 2020 compared to 11,345 thousand cars during the same period a year earlier.

Also, sales of fully imported cars "CBU" increased to reach 20,605 thousand cars compared to 10.979 thousand cars in 2019, a growth of 87.7%.

Passenger car sales increased by 70% during the first two months to 25.349 thousand cars compared to 14.927 thousand cars. Buses also observed a hike in sales at 5,167 buses compared to 2,230 buses with a growth of 131.7%. Trucks' sales also by 10% to 5,694 trucks compared to 5,167.

Some 5 vehicle brands accounted for 54.5% of car market sales during January and February of this year, with around 19,743 thousand cars sold.

Chevrolet held the highest number of car sales with 6,830 vehicles, or 18.9% from the market share, compared to 4,602 cars last year, a growth of 48.4% .

Toyota came second after sales increased by 105.1% to 4,327 cars during the first two months of the year compared to 2,110 cars during the same period last year, While Fiat increased  by a shocking 410.9% to 2,386 cars compared to 467 last year.

Nissan sales also increased by 1.7% to 3,474 cars compared to 3,417 cars, while Hyundai dropped by 5.2% to 2,726 cars compared to 2,877 cars.

Renault sales reached about 1,929 vehicles, and Kia sold about 1,917 cars, while MG sales reached about 1,804 cars.

Moreover, Opel managed to sell about 1,578 cars, Chery Ghabbour about 1,467 cars, Peugeot 1,261 cars, and the rest of the brands sold about 5,064 cars.
