Cannes Film Festival is reportedly planning to unveil a selection of movies early June, in collaboration with several festivals to present some films.
However, the festival organizers also appear to rule out the possibility of a physical festival this fall.
Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), Moondance International Film Festival, and Buffalo International Film Festival are among the film festivals held each fall.
Cannes’ director Thierry Fremaux affirmed in an interview on Sunday that: “a physical edition seems complicated to organize at the current time, thus, we are going forward with an announcement of films from the (initial official) Selection at the beginning of June,”
Frémaux, who is a fervent supporter of the cinema, has vowed to help exhibitors attract moviegoers back this fall.
“The cinema and its industries are threatened. We have to re-build, affirm again its importance with energy, unity, and solidarity,” Fremaux stated previously in a press statement.
“Cannes is planning to organize a “redeployment ‘outside the walls’ (of Cannes), in collaboration with fall festivals,” said a spokesperson for the festival.
Over the weekend, Fremaux revealed that he will only announce a list of movies that were part of the roster and scheduled to be released in theaters between now and next spring, instead of unveiling the whole of what should have been this year’s Official Selection — including out of competition and Un Certain Regard.
These movies will be getting a ‘Cannes 2020’ label, where the selection process for next year’s festival, will start in the fall.
Furthermore, some movies that were selected for this edition and have delayed their release by a year will be considered for the 2021 edition.
On the other hand, the Cannes Marché du Film’s virtual edition is scheduled to run June 22-26, alongside a U.S. agencies-led virtual market.
Meanwhile, the fate of the Venice Film Festival will be decided at the end of the month.
Youtube to host free film festival showcasing Cannes, other festivals
With coronavirus shutting dozens of film festivals worldwide, YouTube decided to launch a 10-day digital film festival this spring with 20 partners — streaming free to cinema lovers worldwide.
The event, titled “We Are One: A Global Film Festival”, is being produced and organized by New York’s Tribeca Enterprises.
The festival is slated to run from May 29-June 7, 2020, and will be available on YouTube and we are one website, which will not include any ads.
The programming slate has not yet been announced, however, it will consist of feature films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy, and panel discussions.
The programming arrives in partnership with 20 top film festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, and Venice Film Festival.
We Are One is also partnered with Annecy International Animation Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Guadalajara International Film Festival, International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM), Jerusalem Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Marrakech International Film Festival, New York Film Festival, San Sebastian International Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, and Tokyo International Film Festival.
The festival organizers are not identifying specific films expected to be screened in the We Are One fest, however, they revealed that the full schedule will be available in the coming weeks.
Viewers will be asked to make donations for COVID-19 relief, which YouTube and Tribeca stated that will be allocated for the benefit of the World Health Organization and local organizations globally.
Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, founders of Tribeca, hopes that the online event unites curators, artists, and storytellers to entertain and provide relief to audiences worldwide.
