In an election that threatens to take Justin Trudeau from power, Canadian citizens started voting on Monday, according to The Times of Israel.

In an early election, Trudeau played in order to win a majority of the parliamentary seats. In polls, the Liberal Party of Trudeau is in a close race with the rival Conservatives.

It is likely that the Liberal Party will win the most parliamentary seats, but it does not yet have a majority and has to count on an opposition party to pass legislation.

Polling stations opened first in the Atlantic coast province of Newfoundland. “Trudeau made an incredibly stupid error in judgment,” said Robert Bothwell, a professor of Canadian history and international relations at the University of Toronto.

Trudeau was elected to lead a stable government with a minority that was not threatened with overthrow.

The opposition has relentlessly accused Trudeau of calling for his own personal goal for the early vote two years before the deadline.

Trudeau channeled the star power of his father, the Liberal icon and late Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau when he first won in 2015, but a combination of high expectations, scandal and calling the election last month during the pandemic have hurt his brand.
