Canadian Prime Minister (PM) Justin Trudeau expressed his deep concern over the devastating impact of recent events on civilians in Lebanon, noting that hundreds of people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes.
This came during a phone call with his Lebanese counterpart, Najib Mikati, during which Trudeau emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate in order to preserve unity, stating that the Lebanese people deserve to live in peace and security.
Trudeau also highlighted the impact on Canadian families affected by the conflict, especially those who have lost their lives or been injured.
The two leaders discussed ongoing efforts to support de-escalation in the region, including Canada’s call for an immediate 21-day ceasefire along the border, according to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s office.
Trudeau affirmed Canada’s commitment to working with the international community to promote peace in the region, expressing his support for a diplomatic settlement in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the implementation of Resolution 2735 concerning the ceasefire in Gaza.
Both leaders expressed their shared concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation due to the conflict and agreed on the need to adhere to international humanitarian law, ensure humanitarian aid reaches affected areas, and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Trudeau reiterated Canada’s commitment to humanitarian support for Lebanon, noting the recent announcement of $10 million in aid to address the urgent needs of civilians.
