Canada’s Alberta Plans Binding Independence Referendum

Alberta is preparing for a potential binding referendum on separation from Canada, with a vote expected to take place in October.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said voters would decide whether the province should move toward a formal referendum on independence, while stressing that she personally supports Alberta remaining within Canada.

The proposed ballot question would ask whether Alberta should stay in Canada or begin constitutional steps toward a legally binding separation vote.

Even if approved, Alberta would not be able to unilaterally declare independence under a 1998 ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada, meaning negotiations with the federal government would still be required.

The move follows growing political tensions between Alberta’s conservative leadership and the federal Liberal government led by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Alberta, Canada’s largest oil-producing province, has long criticized Ottawa over energy policies and federal authority.
